Present day:

It’s the annual cultural event at the Ignited minds.

He is chilling out in the food court sipping his cup of coffee, with his gang, staring at a smoking hot chick sitting on the other side of the table. One of his friends shouts from behind “Dude, you are on stage next.”

————————————————————-

2 years ago:

(They laughed, said goodbye to their friend and came out.)

He: What would have happened if I would have chased you? Do you the think the outcome would have been any different?

She: Maybe!

He: Haha, what, really! Did you even love me?

She: Maybe! Why do you wanna know?

He: Aah, come on. Please, don’t fuck with me.

She: Listen, let’s not get into that now, okay!

He: So that was a, Yes. OMG, I was an idiot.

She: Yes, you were.

He: Then why you didn’t tell me

She: I had to be in my character, I had a reputation to maintain

He: Haha, but at least you could’ve given me a hint

She: I thought, I did.

He: Oh yeah, “But I just see you as a friend”, that’s one heck of a hint (*slow claps*). Anyway, what’s done is done!

She: So you don’t feel the same for me now?

He: It’s been more than 3 years, what do you expect!

She: You asshole!

He: Haha, you are really bad at giving hints. You could have just told me.

She: I knew you would fight the whole world for me but I couldn’t do it.

He: It’s okay. Let’s leave our past behind and have a fresh beginning, what do you say?

She: Haha, okay! As you say, Sire!

He: Anyway, you remember the day I proposed you? I wanted to play guitar and sing a song for you.

She: (laughs out loud) do you even know how to sing or play a GUITAR?

He: Haha, you will see. I am planning to perform at the corporate events from now on.

She: Ahaan, we will see!

————————————————————-

Present day:

She is home alone slumped in a corner of the sofa, a sweater draped over her shoulders, sipping her cup of tea. All of a sudden, she picks up the teacup and throws, calling him an asshole.

Meanwhile, the lights go mild on the stage; he is sitting on a chair with his head bogged down with a guitar in his hand.

She’s blotting her swollen eyes with tissues. She weeps until she can’t catch her breath.

He sings:

Well this heart of mine has been hardened like a stone

It might take some time to get back what is gone

But I’m moving on and you don’t haunt my dreams

Like you did before oh when I would curse your name

Well I heard the news that you were back in town

Just passing through to claim you’re lost and found

But I’m over you and there ain’t nothing that

You could say or do to take what you did back

Well you got nerve to waltz right in

And think what’s mine is yours again

Cause I’ve been doing fine without you

Forgetting all the love we once knew

And girl I ain’t the one who slammed that door

But now you say you’ve changed your thinking

But I ain’t got a heart for breaking

So go and pick your bags up off my floor

Oh cause love don’t live here anymore

Well, baby, you can try to tell me how it is

And try to justify everything you did

But honey I’m no fool and oh I’ve been down this road

Too many times with you I think its best you go

Well I got one thing left to say

Is you can lay in the bed you’ve made

Oh no that love don’t live here anymore

Oh no, no

Sugar no, no

And you don’t live here anymore

Love don’t live here anymore

And since you walked out of my door

Love don’t live here

Love don’t live here girl

Oh love don’t live here anymore

The lights come up and the audience claps and applauds “once more, once more”. He smiles and gets up and bangs the guitar right onto the floor and screams. The cheer stops, the audience goes quiet. He sits on the chair, with elbows on his knees, staring at his folded hands.

He knows he should go to her, but he’s frozen with anger and shame. He apologizes profusely. In that moment he understands that time will heal some wounds, but also that in other ways time will make no difference.

At the same time, she is sitting on the couch reading, but she’s been on the same page for an hour.

P.S. Thanks a lot for checking it out, I hope you enjoyed it. And as you rightly guessed, the song is not written by me. It’s one of my favorite performed by Lady Antebellum – Love Don’t Live Here, enjoy \m/

He: So I am just another guy from your college, huh.

She: Yup, you think you are special

(They both laughed. He points towards the friend)

He: Okay, you both look like good friends!

She: Yeah, she is a good friend of mine. We both did our MBA together and got placed at Ignited minds. She is more into business analysis and I got into what I always wanted. Human Resource.

He: Yeah, you always wanted to interact with Humans and break their heart. I have experienced that before.

(They both laughed.)

He: By the way, from where did you do your MBA? Did you get into IIM after college?

She: Yeah, I made it on the second attempt.

He: That’s awesome. So how was IIM, full of geeks?

She: Haha, nothing like that. People who come to IIM have vision. They actually know what they want in their life. They are more focused, career oriented…

He: Geeks! Or Nerds! Whatever you wanna call them.

She: For a change, I would let you win the argument, for this time.

He: Finally, that day has arrived. I reckon the world is going to end!

She: Now don’t overdo this. So what did you do after college?

He: I was never into studies. You know, I had a bad relationship with classrooms. They were never meant for me. I always wanted to become independent, I felt ashamed asking for money from my mom-dad. So I started working. I joined an IT firm. I worked my ass off for three years. Here I am.

She: Yeah, you barely entered the class. And if you do, you used to spend half of your time with your stupid friends and the rest staring at me.

He: Staring at you! I was a daydreamer. I was actually looking out of the window, what can I do if you were sitting in the same direction!

She: Blah, blah, blah…

He: Haha, Okay, I was.

She: I knew.

He: Oh, this is awkward.

She: What?

He: Hey, you want a drink? Do you even drink? Shall I get you a Mocktail?

She: You have no idea!

He: From when did you start? Beer!

She: Scotch, large, please.

He: Woah, are you sure about this?

She: As I said, you have no idea!

He: Okay, your majesty. Your wish is my command

(He goes and gets two glass of Scotch)

She: This is good

(He starts staring at her)

She: What, why are you staring at me?

He: Nothing. I never thought we will cross paths again

She: Crossing our path again! Let’s say cheers to that!

He: Cheers!

She: So you got a girlfriend? Let me guess – “No…”

He: What if I say – “Yes…”

She: Then you would be lying.

He: How can you be so sure about it? You never know what happened in the last 3 years!

She: But I know you.

He: Really! I still remember you saying “You hardly know me”

She: I never said that.

He: Yes you did.

She: I may have said, “We hardly know each other”!

He: Poteto, potato, whatever! It doesn’t matter now.

She: Yeah, so what did you do after “That”?

He: You mean after proposing you, LoL

She: Haha, yeah. You got drunk, screamed from the rooftop, called my name in your sleep and wept like a child! What did you do?

He: Haha, why do you wanna know? Now you care about me!

She: Haha, nope. I am just curious.

He: So you want to know, how I suffered, huh. You cruel, dragon hearted b****.

(They both laughed)

He: Okay, I will tell you. There was this bug in my mind that you are the most important person in my life and I wanted to convey my feelings to you. Once I did, that bug died. I felt relieved.

She: So you mean to say, that feeling was becoming more of a liability to you?

He: Haha, no I didn’t mean that. Now don’t try to twist this. I mean, I was sad and happy at the same time. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life thinking, it would have been different if I would have told you the way I felt about you. I got your answer. So no hard feelings.

She: We were just two dumb kids who didn’t know what life was all about.

(He smirks)

She: Have you ever imagined what would have happened if I would have said “Yes”!

He: You know me, I don’t think a lot, I just do

She: Yeah, I know, you are dumb. But I thought about it, you are coming from an orthodox Hindu family and I am a Christian. Our parents would have never accepted each other.

He: The matter never got escalated till there. You resolved it in the initial phase itself.

(Conversation went on and six pegs went down)

She: I need a minute

He: Are you going to throw up?

She: Excuse me!

(She comes back after 5 minutes)

She: I am done for the day. Let’s hit the road

He: Okay, let me call a cab.

She: Cab! I have a car.

He: But you are not in a state of handling a car

She: That’s why you will.

He: Do you have insurance.

She: Yes, I do. Here is the key.

(They both laughed, said goodbye to their friend and came out)

To be continued.

P.S. Wear your seat belt folks, it’s going to be a long drive 😀

“Love is like a mixture of chemical substances. If there is any reaction, people involved are transformed.” – Carl Jung

Their attitude towards life changed after ‘The Proposal’. They both disappeared from each other’s life and started concentrating on their own. They were done with their Bachelor’s degree. They always knew what they wanted. He was never interested in higher education but he was a kick-ass programmer who can give a hard time to any experienced professional working with the top MNCs. His urge to become independent and his eye for the technology pushed him to take a job at one of the IT firms.  She had a different mindset; she always wanted to pursue MBA from IIM, it was her dream. She decided to prepare for Common Admission Test (CAT). And IIM is the dessert only the cream of CAT tastes. They were determined to move on and sort out their life.

After 3 years –

He was at the office in the middle of a heated discussion and his phone rings, “Hello, I am calling from Ignited Minds. Are you looking for a job change?” Though he was incredibly great at his job but he was highly underpaid. So he rushed out of the meeting and said: “Yes, I am”. He agreed for the interview on the next day. He was skilled enough to crack the interview on any given day and he did the same. The interviewer was flattered by his performance and forwarded the profile to the HR for Salary negotiation.

He was confident, he knew he had given his best in the interview, but on the other hand he was nervous too, he had never negotiated the salary before. He was a techy, not a negotiator. With a racing heart, he entered the room and *Bling* he was shocked; he saw her sitting on the other side of the table. She was the one whom he was going to negotiate with. It just made him more uncomfortable. But this time he meant business. She said “Please take a seat. I know it was a long day, you had your lunch? You look tired! Let me know if you need anything.” He said, “I am just a hungry tiger looking for the job and this is my meal”. They both smiled and the interview went on for half an hour, in the end, she made an offer which he couldn’t refuse. He took the deal and decided to join the firm after 2 weeks.

Although he was happy with the offer, he was damn confused, not with the job but with the negotiator. He was still in shock. He came out of the room thinking “Who was she? She looked just like her, but she didn’t recognize me! Back in the days, she had long hair, used to wear glasses and had clips on her teeth. Maybe I was mistaken. Naah, it can’t be her. ” He knew it was her but he was not ready to accept the fact. He resigned that day, wrapped up his unfinished business in the next two weeks and was excited to join the new company.

Finally, after two weeks, he joined Ignited minds. As he was returning from the HR department after submitting all the required documents, someone from behind “Hey, so you joined, I thought you won’t”. “So, it is you!” he said. She said, “Yeah, didn’t you recognize me!” He said “Haha, I was confused; I mean you were a different gal altogether back then. Look at you. How are you doing?”. She said, “Come on, I know, I have grown in terms of perimeter and yeah, I am doing great.” He said “Good to know that,” She said “I am so sorry, I really want to have this conversation but I am getting late, I will see you around. Take care.” He said, “Okay then, bubye.”

The conversation which lasted only for a couple of minutes brought back all the bittersweet memories of the past. He never wanted to face her after ‘The Proposal’ but he was happy at the same time. It was a mixed feeling. They were not the same college kids anymore. They had become professionals. He wanted to talk to her but didn’t know where to start. As dumb as he can get, he thought to be in his own shell. He slowly started making friends at the new office. One day, one of his friends invited him for a party. He was hesitant at first but then he agreed.

Since he was new, he was getting introduced to everyone by his friend. Fortunately or unfortunately, she was there at the party too.  When it came to her, the friend said “She is…”; he said, “I know”. She said, “Yeah, we are from the same college.” The friend said “That’s cool. I will leave you two together to catch up. Have fun, make yourself at home”. And the friend went on to grab some beer.

He said, “So I am just another guy from your college, huh”. She said “Yup, you think you are special” They both laughed and started talking.

Layla: Untold Story

Disclaimer: All characters and events depicted below are purely fictional. Any resemblance to a real person, living or dead is purely coincidental. Anyway, don’t forget to check out Layla: Butterflies (Click here) before you proceed. I dedicate this to all the ladies out there.

8 years, 3 months, 25 days ago (don’t remember the hour, minutes or seconds) –

I had a tough time to find the nail polish matching with my Azure blue jeans. I wanted to look at my best. Feel confident and sexy. I was wondering if I should just put the lipstick or the whole set of makeup. Oh, it was a very confusing day. I took (just) 3 hours to get ready. I was worried about the people I was about to meet. Would they like me? Generally, people are just jealous of me. It was my first day at college. (for the record, it takes 2 hours and 50 minutes to get ready on a normal day)

I felt like every other guy was staring at me. It was not like; I was not checking them out! There were good looking, well-groomed guys too. One guy even approached me to ask my phone number on the first meet. What the heck! Do I look like a bitch? I had to slap him to get things straight. But, boy, he was charming. He had a good physique, hair, and a nice ass. I liked his confidence and the way he approached. And, we started talking (just talking; keep your dirty mind on hold). He was a good conversationalist; we used to talk for hours. He was rich and romantic (now that’s a good thing, huh)

After few days, I noticed another guy in our class. He used to sit at the back of the class in the rightmost corner. I felt his eyes upon me. This time it was different, it was not a vulgar stare. There was this shining in his eyes that caught mine. He was not very handsome but he was tall (had long legs, if you know what I mean). It might be his style or sexy smile. I still don’t know, there was something about him which was always intriguing.

Although he used to come occasionally to the class, he used to win the teacher’s heart. One day, my friend passed a book to me and told me to write my phone number. I saw the cover and found that the book belonged to him. I looked at him and he gave a creepy smile. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings so I gave my number. And when I asked for his, the fellow said “Sorry! I don’t have a mobile”. That was strange. I mean, this is the 21st century! And the guy doesn’t even have a mobile.

Meanwhile, I was in a relationship with the nice ass guy. After all, I found out that he was not so chivalrous as I thought. He was just another dominating jerk looking for pleasure. I broke up with him. After a long time, that day, it rained hard, almost for the whole day.  And when I checked my mobile in the evening, I had received some dumb text messages from an unknown number (at first, I thought it was from the nice-ass guy, but), when I inquired, I got to know that it was from the long-legs guy. Finally, the guy got a mobile (LOL)

I was confused about my relationship with the nice ass guy. I had to think a lot to convince myself that “I liked him but he was a jerk, so there was no way other than breaking apart”. It took me some time to come out of it. In the interim, I used to get these funny messages from the long-legs guy, and it kinda cheered me up. We used to chat for a whole day but I never spoke of my relationship with the nice ass guy. It was THE END of the nice-ass guy; he no longer existed in my world.

And we (I mean the long-legs guy) started talking (chatting, to be precise). I used to always disagree on his point of view. But he was polite and used to say – “Let’s agree to disagree” He always listened to me, he was calm even when we argued on some shitty topic. He never spoke much live (I mean in the real world). He was a geek with a sense of humor. He was protective, logical, pragmatic, straightforward, supportive and caring (what else women want). And aww, he was cute. I used to call him “baby” [***WTF, I hope this story gets better***]

It was my final year of the college. While I was sitting at home sipping my cup of tea, I got a call from him; it was so windy on his side that I wasn’t able to hear clearly. He said that he wanted to talk to me and I agreed to it. I was getting this weird and wonderful feeling that he was in love with me. And it felt good thinking that someone actually loves me. It was an amazing feeling which I can’t describe. I waited for him at the college but he didn’t turn up. He was late as usual and I got pissed off and left. I waited for his call or text, but there was no response. I felt like he was ignoring me. That made me go wild, I felt like hulk (I don’t remember if it was due to that time of the month). Maybe I was falling for him. I just slept over it.

I knew that he wasis going to propose me the next day and I didn’t know what to say. I was still confused. I saw him at the coaching institute, smiled and stood next to him. I asked, “Hey, you called me yesterday; you wanted to say something!” I don’t know what happened to him, he was silent for few seconds. And then he just gave the best proposal I have ever heard. He said “I still remember the first time I saw you…aah you know what I am going to say, right. (He paused for a second and said) I love you. Before you say anything else, let me complete. It’s not something which started yesterday or the day before, I have been feeling this for a long time. I love you from the bottom of my heart. Why am I telling this now? Coz we are almost done with our college, we might not even meet after this, but I really wanted to tell you the way I felt about you. 10 years down the line, I don’t wanna think that my life would have been different if I had proposed you. You don’t have to give an answer right now. Take your time. Think and decide.”

In that moment, I thought I was not ready for it. I was in love but I wanted to be independent. I had goals to achieve and I thought that a relationship might be a distraction for me at that point of time. So I tried to dodge the bullet. I said “Why…We hardly know each other”. He said “If you need to hear why I love you, I can go on all night and day. I mean, we know each other from the past 3 years, but if you still think the same, I am game to spend more time with you. I would love if I can get to know more about you. I want a lifetime with you, and with you, forever won’t be too long.” I had a lump in my throat. I lied, I said, “But I just see you as a friend”. For the first time, I saw the rage in his eyes. He said “I apologize; I can’t see myself as your friend or brother. I can’t play a different role in your life other than the one I want to.” I thought that was his arrogance to say something like that and not respect what I said. And my attitude came to play; I said: “I am really sorry”. He just smiled and walked away.

I wanted him to chase me and sweep me off my feet. But it didn’t happen. I will never forget what he said for the rest of my life.

Layla: Butterflies

Disclaimer: All characters and events depicted below are purely fictional. Any resemblance to a real person, living or dead is purely coincidental.

I still remember the day, when he saw her for the first time. Wasn’t she beautiful! Poor guy, his heart stopped beating for a while, she was adorable that even I went blank, no! I was rather lost. I wanted to tell him to look somewhere else but his eyeballs were stuck on her (let’s not talk about the state of his mouth). She was just entering the class looking like an angel in blue jeans. They just shared an eye contact for a fraction of a second and he whispered “Oh…my…god” In that moment, he came out of a cardiac arrest.

It was his first day at college, he was trying to make conversation with other folks but her eyes grabbed his attention. That night, he was restless, just thinking about her. Trying to imagine the way she looked, her eyes, even her thoughts would make him smile. He was in love for the first time.

A few days later, he thought of getting her phone number. So I came up with a master plan. We decided to pass on his only notebook to EVERYBODY (subtle huh) in the class and get their number. When the book was passed to her, (oh that million dollar smile on his face), she looked at him and wrote down the number. She gently asked for his (this was the first time they spoke with each other; he just felt a ton of butterflies in his stomach) He was dumbstruck for a couple of seconds. Then he said “Sorry! I don’t have a mobile”. Oh god, he was never fond of mobiles before. But that day changed something. Mobile became the only thing he ever wanted. It became a mission. And he cried and begged, and finally got one.

Now we had the biggest problem confronting us, the starting trouble. I confused him (that’s kind of my hobby). He had her number but he was in “should I or should I not” phase. With toe in his mouth, he decided to send few (4 per day, after every meal) forward messages. Finally got a reply from her, “May I know who is this?” Oops my bad, I had forgotten to tell him to put his name below the forward message. Then he introduced himself; there was no reply from her. He just kept sending those forward messages (hoping to get a reply), and one day she replied with another forward message.

At that moment, all hell broke loose, I planned a scheme to contradict the shit mentioned in that forward message (please don’t try this at home; not a good idea to contradict a girl based on some dumb forward message). But somehow it worked. And they started talking to each other (chatting to be precise). When it comes to the real world, our guy never had the balls to talk to her, his legs trembled, mouth went dry, I used to go blank (I don’t know why? Maybe I was falling for her!)

A couple of years passed, it was almost the end of the college. I was in love with her, truly, madly, deeply, and I was fucked. And he was so passionate about her, for him, she was the one. She was driving him crazy. So we decided to put our shit together and get it done, once and for all.

March 28th – It’s been few days that I have kept him awake.  He used to look at his mobile every fucking second, waiting for her message. She had unknowingly cast a spell on him; he was addicted to her. That night, he was just staring into the infinite void of the sky (and I was blank! It happens at times with me)

March 29th – I don’t know what I was thinking, I told him to take out his bike, ride as fast as he can (oh that felt good). Love was blowing in the wind; he felt every grain of sand as he was walking on the beach, gazing at the endless horizon. Sun was half set, I was confused (this happens a lot), I told him to call her and the dumb fellow called (LOL). She received the call and said “Hello” and there was silence for few seconds. He goes “I wanna say something (and his heart skipped a beat), not through this, I wanna say it in person, I will catch you tomorrow.” She said “Okay then, see you at college, bye”, and he just disconnected the call. His pants were almost wet.

March 30th – He went to college to confess his love. By the time he reached, she had left. He went berserk. He called up his gang and told them that he is going to propose her today at any cost, even if that meant going to her home and shouting from the gate. At that point of time, nothing else mattered. But he needed a bit of liquid courage. So they went to a BAR bought a pint (mixed it with coke), went to college rooftop, bottom’s up. And they were just counting stars on a hot sunny day. He missed, India Vs. Pakistan, 2011 world cup semi final for her sake (naah he was just high throughout the match). Considering our condition, we postponed it to the next day.

March 31st – D-day. He wore his lucky black shirt and went to the coaching institute where they were doing the project together, told his gang not to enter the lift so that he and she will have some lone time. She saw him, smiled and stood alongside him. By the time, the lift had come, they both entered. She asked, “Hey, you called me yesterday; you wanted to say something!” All the blood flowed in his mouth.  He said “I still remember the first time I saw you…aah you know what I am going to say, right” She gave a look like she doesn’t (I thought, she had a smile on her face, oh I bet, that bitch knew what he wanted to say, but still she wanted to hear it from his mouth). He said “I love you.

She had a weird expression on her face (I guess, she was about to throw up in her mouth), she said “Why…We hardly know each other”.  “If you need to hear why I love you, I can go on all night and day. I mean, we know each other from the past 3 years, but if you still think the same, I am game to spend more time with you. I would love if I can get to know more about you. I want a lifetime with you, and with you, forever won’t be too long.” he said.

She said “But I just see you as a friend” [“Friend zoned” really! What the fuck] “I apologize; I can’t see myself as your friend or brother. I can’t play a different role in your life other than the one I want to” he said (It was always his way or the highway).

“I am really sorry.” she said. He just smiled (from the outside and wept from the inside)

This was the closest he ever came to a relationship. They never spoke after this and he never wore his lucky black shirt again.

(By the way, I had a Plan B, to propose on April 1st with the song “love you till the end”, he totally screwed it. If it was my way, things would never be the same)

Present day –

He is chilling out in some food court sipping his coffee, with his gang, staring at a smoking hot chick sitting on the other side of the table (I think I like her too, “Gulabi ankhein Jo teri dekhi Sharabi ye dil ho gaya”)

Oh, did I introduce myself? Hi, I am Mind. Just between you and me, this is what I will be playing tonight in his dreams (pretty nice huh, just like facebook memories)
